How to Empower Employees

By Bob Hamilton

When you open a dollar store retaining the best employees is always a challenge. If there is not a positive work environment, if employees are not recognized and appreciated, and if there is not an opportunity to learn and grow, employees may well seek opportunities where these conditions exist.

As a new business owner there is a natural tendency to want to stay in control of all of the details of your new business. When you open a dollar store you want to know how everything is being done and how everything is going. Yet letting go of some tasks and responsibilities will provide you with much needed time to address more important business management issues.

Employees who have learned tasks and then demonstrated that they can be trusted to complete them successfully without supervision are great candidates for

assuming those tasks. By empowering them to complete those tasks you are sending a very positive message. It is a message about your confidence in their performance. You are also creating a more positive working environment.

One way to transfer tasks to employees is to slowly step away after them employee has been trained. As the employee demonstrates their competence in successfully completing the task, take another step back and allow that employee to do more without direct supervision. Soon the employee will be completing the task with very little supervision at all.

In addition to the positive impact this can have on your employees, it will also have a very positive impact on you.  You will have the time to handle more important tasks. You will be able to trust that tasks will be correctly completed without you having to be present at all times.

When you open a dollar store begin to immediately establish a great working environment for your employees. That great environment may very well be the reason that employees choose to work for you. Start by empowering employees as they demonstrate that they can be trusted to perform tasks.
